2023 Tyler Mason (Virginia) played some
meaningful minutes and made his impact felt in front of a packed house at Hoop
Hall this past weekend. Notching a 73-72
win over one of the country’s top ranked teams Mater Dei and in front of Kentucky’s John
Calipari.
Mason, a 6-foot-9, combo forward in
the Class of 2023 is one of the most promising and intriguing prospects in the
area and on the Bishop O’Connell roster.
O’Connell plays in the WCAC in what many experts consider to be the top
basketball conference in the country.
Tyler Mason brings a combination of size and dexterity that is
unmatched in the DC Metro area high school scene right now in his class. Mason
can post, handle (not something you get to see on the HS side) and he
will battle in the paint as well as play some face up basketball with a soft
touch from distance for the lefty. Mason
is also a very sure-handed rebounder who can also go and get it out of his
area. Bottom-line is there is not much not to like with Mason at this stage.
Any high major program is going to be interested in recruiting Tyler to
their program. He has enough of what is needed - size, skill and mobility and
is developing the necessary strength - for a coach to envision years with a
target guards can't ignore - nor would want to. Should Mason’s body streamline
and his strength and 'run and jump' athleticism improve, it is right to project
him as high as any future post prospect in the country if he is handled
correctly.
Which brings us to the summer front where rumor has it that Mason will
be making his first appearance on the Elite
Youth Basketball League (EYBL) circuit; A strong showing will more than validate
the buzz that is being generated currently – one of DC area’s top evaluatora has
this to say when we phoned to inquire about Mason:
“He’s displayed a ferocious
intensity and instinct. As a rim-running player is where his immediate impact
will be as he is still developing his offensive arsenal, but he is already a
solid finisher and shows versatility on the perimeter with ball in his hands".
